INTERNEWS
The horrific war in Ukraine has put journalists, content creators, and activists at extreme risk of physical harm or persecution. Invasion forces are targeting media outlets, blowing up broadcast towers, and depriving the Ukrainian people of trustworthy information when they need it most. Local, independent media not only give a window on what’s happening to galvanize worldwide outrage and support, but they also provide Ukrainians with life-saving information about conflict areas to avoid, where to take shelter and get food, and how to travel safely.

After the invasion of Russia, the local media have great difficulty doing their job. This puts independent reporting in grave danger. While reliable information is life-saving! That’s why we introduced the Media Lifeline Ukraine: a coalition to protect journalists and keep reliable information available in and around Ukraine which we believe will be absolutely essential for the longer term. The coalition will work to provide this and other aid in the longer term, in order to keep independent reporting alive in a possibly occupied Ukraine.
GLOBAL GIVING
Independent journalists in Ukraine have risked their lives to uncover human rights abuses and corruption – and to protect public interest – in the country. Responding to the invasion of Ukraine, Internews is giving emergency funds to protect Ukrainian journalists and help them provide trust-worthy, life-saving information to communities in conflict areas. Journalists play a critical role in briefing the world a true account of conflicts. Without journalists, affected communities – those who have the most stake, and the most to lose in a conflict – may not be able to get their voices heard, as well as access life-saving information. By supporting Ukrainian journalists during this humanitarian crisis, you are helping to ensure communities receive the information that they need to make informed decisions, and the means to make their voices heard.
INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF JOURNALISTS
The IFJ, the world’s largest organisation of journalists, represents 600,000 media professionals from 187 trade unions and associations in more than 140 countries. Established in 1926, the IFJ is the organisation that speaks for journalists within the United Nations system and within the international trade union movement. First established as the Fédération Internationale des Journalistes (FIJ) in 1926 in Paris, it was relaunched as the International Organization of Journalists (IOJ) in 1946, but lost its Western members to the Cold War and re-emerged in its present form in 1952 in Brussels.
EUROPEAN NETWORK OF JOURNALISTS
We are a European network of journalists and in close contact with our colleagues on the ground in Ukraine. This fundraiser is also supported by our partners Croatian Journalists’ Association, FragDenStaat, Netzwerk Recherche, Reporters without Borders and taz Panter Stiftung. With your money, we primarily support independent Ukrainian journalists on the ground or in exile, but also journalists who have been working in Ukraine for some time and are still there or have just had to leave the country. The journalists still on the ground are in great danger, both as civilians and as the ones who are expected to keep the world up to date as it is watching. Journalists in exile who had to leave the country also face very serious challenges.
